More than 80 chief executives from leading UK retailers have written to the Prime Minister urging action to tackle youth unemployment and improve access to work for young people.
The letter highlights concerns that rising employment costs and regulatory changes are making it harder for businesses to recruit entry-level staff. Signatories warn that more than one million people under 25 remain outside education, employment or training.
Retailers argue that the sector is uniquely positioned to help, accounting for almost a quarter of youth employment across the UK and providing accessible entry routes into work and long-term careers.
The group has proposed three priorities: establishing a government-retail taskforce to simplify employment support schemes, reducing the cost of employing young people and ensuring employment and skills reforms encourage rather than discourage entry-level recruitment.
The letter calls for closer collaboration between government and retail to create more opportunities for young people while supporting economic growth.
