Offering six designs within the Distinctive Landscape Collection and just four within the Universal Collection this is evidence that you do not need a huge portfolio of colour to keep the consumers happy. A carefully selected palette offering the consumer mid, light, and dark offerings has been all that is needed.
The best-selling colours for both brands are mid tone oak colours which relate to traditional wood tones. Distinctive Landscape Parquet in Hawthorn and Universal Flooring Parquet in Smoke enjoyed 33% of the overall parquet sales between them demonstrating that consumers purchasing parquet are doing so because they want that timeless, traditional look.
Polyflor agrees: “Herringbone is very fashionable at the moment and our Cambridge and Georgian Parquet designs from our Camaro Range are extremely popular.
“The beauty of LVT is that you can be creative with installation patterns. Any of our glue down LVT planks can be installed in a herringbone laying pattern – many people are opting to do this with full planks or even cutting planks to their desired size for a more bespoke herringbone installation,” says Faye Alletson of Polyflor.
The company provides a sophisticated online visualiser to quickly and easily see how Polyflor products would look installed in the home.
A key new feature now allows you to toggle between straight laid and Herringbone laying patterns to see what works in the space.
The
Invictus brand of LVT from
Associated Weavers has invested heavily in class-leading in-store displays for retailers which can showcase herringbone designs with larger-sized samples that consumers appreciate.
“We show all our parquet designs in large format and I must say it
has been very successful with our customers and the end consumer,” says Gavin Pugh, UK MD of Associated Weavers. “We also show different laying patterns, such as traditional parquet, block formation and combinations of colours and we know that people really want to see parquet on a larger format to get the full visual… then it sells itself!”
New England Oak and Highland Oak are flagship parquet floors for Invictus and the award-winning LVT display system and the brand’s website feature an advanced room visualiser that allows consumers to view roomsets or upload their own room photo to see the designs in herringbone, woodblock and tramline laying patterns. And the photo below shows how a combination of decors can be highly effective.
Next month there will be more from Invictus as new parquet designs come to the UK to increase the momentum of its popularity.
“A herringbone laying style is a much-loved choice, thanks to its contemporary classic feel and striking finish,” says Stella Coyle, national retail sales manager of
Karndean Designflooring.
“It is now more popular than ever before, and over the years, more and more pattern variations have been introduced. This includes alternating herringbone designs with more than one colour,” she says.
Karndean’s Art Select, Van Gogh and Knight Tile ranges all feature a modern collection of small plank herringbone designs in a versatile range of wood tones. There is also established traditional (9” x 3”) parquet planks available in a range of deep, blond and light grey tones as part of the Art Select collection.
New for 2021, Karndean’s popular herringbone design can now be achieved in less time with the new click-locking Van Gogh rigid core designs. Grey Brushed Oak, Warm Brushed Oak, Golden Brushed Oak and Salvaged Barnwood – include a mix of warm wood and cool grey tones in a 28” x 7” small plank herringbone. It’s a flexible option for home decorators and designers looking for less upheaval when it comes to installation as you can install over an existing or uneven subfloor. The enhanced acoustics also helps support a healthy home as sound transfer to rooms below can be reduced.
“Our love of herringbone has also led to more of us opting to match designs room to room. Therefore, having the flexibility to be able to pair herringbone designs with matching full-length planks is also important going forward,” says Stella. “That’s why our parquet and herringbone designs can be perfectly paired with full length planks to achieve colour continuity in
the home.”
Brampton Chase has launched a new collection of large plank and herringbone sizes with an impressive range of decors and micro bevel edges.

Fin Wood is a London-based hardwood floor installation and finish firm which prides itself on attention to detail.
Founder Alin Critescu said “For quality installation, there are two aspects to think about: how it looks on the surface - details of how it goes around doors and meets other floors - and how it looks underneath. The subfloor is crucial for long lasting floors. It needs to be flat and free of moisture.”
The wood used is from a British factory, supplied by a forest in Cristescu’s home country of Romania. Commenting on building his business, Cristescu worked with Starling Bank and said “One piece of advice I would give people looking to start out is to have the right business tools at hand to allow you to focus on the quality of your work.”
ACCESSIBLE STYLE IN CUSHION FLOOR
With sales and trend reports all pointing to herringbone’s continued popularity, Leoline is making the look accessible through a range of stylish cushion vinyl options.

“We’ve eight wood-effect herringbone variants throughout the range and have even brought the pattern to tile and stone for a really edgy, contemporary feel. The range is broad with classic herringbone styles like Sintra, the reclaimed timber effect of Lido and the striking chevron look of Olympus in trendy grey hues; and there’s something at every price point. From our Luxury Trends collection right up to Comfytex Deluxe and Timberline, our cushion vinyl floors deliver the hugely popular herringbone look in a floor that’s affordable, easy to install, tough, simple to clean and comfortable,” he said.
