Moving beyond the mainstream

David Spragg • SPECIAL FEATURE • August 31, 2021
Man-made fibres are the mainstay of the UK flooring industry and an impressive commitment to fibre development has seen a steady improvement in appearance and performance alongside the family-friendly cleanability that consumers love.

Increasingly now there are several synthetic ranges that are moving beyond the mainstream with enhanced appeal, recognising that some consumers are less price sensitive this year as they unlock those unspent savings that haven’t been squandered on holidays and socialising!
Given that these products are still highly price competitive, the extra quality gives retailers an opportunity for better margins while offering their customer added value.

This approach is exemplified in the latest development from Abingdon Flooring, Stainfree Aristocat. “While the StainFree collection underlines our ability to deliver homes stain-resistant carpets that are among the best value on the market, we’re also focused on making sure that it offers the appealing benefits of man-made fibres in mid and upper tiers too,” says Millie Barlow, head of marketing, Abingdon Flooring.

“StainFree Aristocat is a new carpet which demonstrates just how far man-made fibres have come in the last few years, not only offering homeowners a reassuring lifetime of stain-performance, but also a far better feel that’s akin to premium fibres such as polyamide or polyester,” she says.

Through developments in technology, Abingdon has been able to create a polypropylene yarn that feels far softer without trading anything in terms of performance. “Using this new yarn in luxurious pile heights and pile weights, rather than engineering the product to hit a particular price-point, means we’re able to achieve a man-made carpet that delivers added-value, bringing a feeling of luxury that’s hugely accessible,” says Millie.

Invictus Carpet, the award winning brand by Associated Weavers, has turned adding value to man-made carpets into an artform with sophisticated products backed up by class-leading in-store merchandising.

The brand’s message is: invincible comfort – stunningly rich texture – superior stain resistance and Associated Weavers are using a new generation of iVinci polypropylene yarn, for an extra bulky and comfortable look and feel. All are available in 3m, 4m and 5m widths.

The all time Invictus favourites Orion and Sirius received an update to the colourbank, giving the range a modern look and making it ready for 2021 (and beyond) to meet customer needs.

Furlong Flooring plays a leading role in building the core ranges for many retailers and Elegance has long been its signature range, with its natural wool look combined with the practical benefits of stain and moth resistance - it’s the perfect choice for customers who desire a sophisticated and elegant carpet, which is affordable and hard-wearing.

Elegance completes a full overhaul of Furlong’s twist collection.
Re-introduced to the market with significantly enhanced features, it now comes at 180,000 tufts per square metre, an increase of more than 20,000, is 3oz heavier than its predecessor and offers a more pinpoint and refined finish as well as enhanced performance. The range also now features Furlong’s award-winning Combi-bac backing for stress free installation as standard.

Finally, Furlong’s signature range comes with an industry leading
10-year warranty, protecting against all stains except gloss paint,
and is available in 16 on-trend plain and heathered tones.

Alternative Flooring lives up to its name with its intriguing Anywhere range which is an eye-catching option to interest discerning consumers. Any place, any time Anywhere is an ingenious indoor-outdoor flooring collection ideal as a carpet and with the Anywhere border range, it can be made into rugs and runners.

Anywhere has the visual texture of sisal with the benefit of being able to be fitted and used anywhere. It can be cleaned easily and
is extremely hardwearing. It is suitable for any room in the
house including kitchens and bathrooms and can be made into
rugs for outside.

This synthetic look a-like, sisal-style flooring is available in five textured patterns – Bouclé, Panama, Herringbone, Rope and Shadow in a classic and contemporary natural palette.
