Nature inspires future fibres

Rita Bancroft • January 24, 2023

This feature has historically focused on innovations in both synthetic and natural fibre technology, whilst honouring materials that have been used in carpets for centuries.

Technological advancements in synthetic fibres have seen a host of new carpet collections that deliver softness underfoot and are easy to maintain. At the same time, we have seen a consumer shift towards using natural materials in our homes.

This year’s keynote theme at Domotex, the world leading flooring

trade show which took place in Hannover from 12 to 15 January was

“Floored by Nature”. Interestingly both manmade and natural materials

featured during the topical discussions around the responsibility towards

our environment and nature. Sonia Wedell-Castellano, Global Director

Domotex explained in a press release, “Floored by Nature means

discovering new environmentally compatible possibilities and making

optimum use of existing resources. The goal is to create healthy,

sustainable and at the same time inspiring spaces.”

There were three elements within the Floored by Nature keynote

theme: Connecting Markets, Conscious Living, and Colourful Nature.

Connecting Markets addressed the challenges in the supply chain, the

impact of increasing energy costs, and new online trading platforms.

Conscious Living, looked at the desire for healthy living and working, and

the commitment to environmentally friendly materials and manufacturing

processes, including the circular use of materials. The third focus theme,

Colourful Nature, presented nature as a new focal point and a source of

inspiration both in terms of design and materials.

"Floored by Nature means discovering new environmentally compatible possibilities and making optimum use of existing resources. The goal is to create healthy, sustainable and at the

same time inspiring spaces.”

We caught up with two companies who are paying particular focus to

nature for their design inspiration and the materials they are sourcing.

Alternative Woosie brings out the best qualities of two natural

sustainable fibres which are firm favourites in interiors. The ultimate

mix of hard-wearing sisal fibre with the softness of a 3-ply woollen yarn

means that the Woosie Wise carpet (pictured) is both beautiful and

textural. It is a great example of how Alternative invests in innovative

flooring. The interwoven fibres of the wool and sisal create three

nuanced patterns. The designs are Woosie Check, Woosie Panama

and Woosie BouclО in a palette of warm comfortable neutrals to cool

contemporary greys.

“Alternative Woosie brings out the best qualities of two natural sustainable fibres which are firm favourites in interiors.”

Alternative’s vision is to be in the hearts, minds and homes of stylish

individuals everywhere. “Doing the right thing means the world to us. We

make carpets with a conscience, being totally transparent about what’s in our products and using ethically-sourced natural fibres wherever we can,” explains Lorna Haigh, creative and marketing director at Alternative.

Through their pledge with Ecologi, Alternative are involved in many

worthwhile, well managed projects which help the planet. Some of

these projects are in countries where some of Alternatives plant fibre

materials are sourced. For example, sisal is harvested in the dry arid

areas of Madagasca, so through Ecologi they are actively supporting local Mangrove re-planting in these areas.

Brockway, the home of wool carpet believe that a wool carpet provides
