Belgium stalls on carpet import growth
Latest data for carpet imports shows a suprise fall in products coming into the country from Belgium, the UK's largest trading partner for carpets.
The value of Belgium imports fell by 0.7% for the latest period analysed in February - a marked contrast to the performance in January when the figures bounced up a full third on last year's performance.
Overall £75.6m of carpet came into the UK in February according to a report compiled by The Furnishing Report based on HMRC customs data, a rise of 17% compared to the growth of 31% for January.
That growth was driven mainly by the Netherlands which enjoyed a 43% boost in their exports to Britain while Turkish imports were up 21% and India up 9%. Chinese imports fell 16.3 percent to £4.2 million, a trend that has been seen across the furnishing sector.
