All-time low for consumer confidence
Consumer confidence has hit an all-time low with major purchase decisions for things like furniture and flooring falling still further, according to leading retail analysts GfK.
“The GfK Consumer Confidence Barometer recorded a headline score of minus 40 in May, the worst since our records began in 1974," says GfK's strategy director Joe Staton.
"This means consumer confidence is now weaker than in the darkest days of the global banking crisis, the impact of Brexit on the economy, or the Covid shutdown," he said. "The outlook for consumer confidence is gloomy, and nothing on the economic horizon shows a reason for optimism any time soon.”
The Major Purchase Index asks consumers if now is a good time to buy major household good like furniture, flooring and appliances. It has now falled in each of the last six months to reach this month's index of minus 35.
