Carpet imports into the UK declined for the first time in six months according to the latest data for September with non-EU trade showing a steep decline.
Overall, carpet imports were down 2.5% in September but Belgium, Britain's biggest trading partner was up over 4%.
The deficit is driven by poor performance from Turkey, 22% down, and China, 12% down, which, given the buoyant consumer demand for flooring, is likely to be a reflection on supply chain issues for containerised goods.
Nevertheless, for the year to date, carpet import growth is around 40% ahead of 2020 at £731m of value, confirmed the strong return of consumer confidence in flooring purchase during this year.
